The shrine is dedicated to Emperor Godaigo, Kusunoki Masashige, and Yoshimizu Munenobu, the Hoin. It is known for many historical anecdotes, including being the place where Minamoto no Yoshitsune hid with Shizuka Gozen and Benkei after being pursued by Minamoto no Yoritomo, serving as Emperor Godaigo's temporary palace during the Nanboku-cho period, and as Toyotomi Hideyoshi's headquarters for cherry blossom viewing. The Shoin study (an Important Cultural Property) includes the Emperor Godaigo throne room, Yoshitsune's hiding place room, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi's cherry blossom viewing room.
